YMMV / Grace Jones

Go To

  • Accidental Innuendo: "Pull Up to the Bumper" garnered controversy in its time for its lyrics, which were widely interpreted to be a series of car-themed sex metaphors. Jones denies this, and has strongly insisted that "Pull Up to the Bumper" is simply about being in New York traffic.
  • Covered Up: General audiences tend to be more familiar with The Police's version of "Demolition Man" than with Jones' original rendition. Part of this is because the Police's frontman, Sting, originally wrote the song, and another part is owed to the Police having been a much bigger act at the time.
  • LGBT Fanbase: She's been a beloved icon of queer culture her entire career. It helps that her older brother Chris was gay in addition to being a club DJ, costume designer, and her earliest collaborator.
  • Growing the Beard: Warm Leatherette is generally regarded as the album where Jones truly found her footing as a musician, featuring the debut of her signature mix of reggae and edgy New Wave Music and the first of many Jean-Paul Goude-designed album covers.
  • Sampled Up: There's a decent chance a lot of younger people know her solely because of her song "La Vie En Rose" being sampled in "Beach Walk" by Whitewoods (The song that Pyrocynical used to have as his intro).
