- Anvilicious:
- A person who is appointed in a high position due to their connections or relationships to a higher-up doesn't guarantee that they'll be competent. Likewise, being loyal to one person and not to the cause is very detrimental.
- Nationalism shouldn't be restricted to pure ideological stance or glory but should be about fully embracing what you have lived for.
- The movie makes a point about placing the national heroes (Luna, Del Pilar, et al) on pedestals and disregarding their flaws. In the end, they're all human beings with virtues and vices.
- Contested Sequel: While the film is critically praised, people are divided whether or not it lives up to Heneral Luna's quality.
- Continuity Lockout: The short film Angelito, released for free on YouTube, bridges Luna and Goyo. It's needed to explain why Joven is now a photographer's assistant instead of a newspaper reporter.
- Romantic Plot Tumor: One of the few criticisms of the film is that the film gave way too much focus on Gregorio del Pilar's romantic exploits, especially in the first half.
