- Broken Aesop:
- Presumably, we're meant to deplore the way in which Goldine has been grotesquely exploited. But at the same time, we're also apparently meant to root for her to win at the Olympics, even though it means her crooked handlers' plan worked.
- It's a commentary on the commercialization of the Olympics... sponsored by NBC for the express purpose of promoting their coverage of the Olympics. An Olympics which the United States ended up boycotting.
- Harsher in Hindsight: The fact that the U.S. would ultimately boycott the Moscow Games is a pall that hangs over the whole movie. It just renders pointless all the things that Goldine is put through, all of which result in her death.
