* FirstInstallmentWins: Promptly inverted. Their debut ''Terra Incognita'' is their least popular record overall, only being relevant for "Love" and "Clone". Their three most recent albums (''L'Enfant Sauvage'', ''Magma'' and ''Fortitude'') are the most successful and popular so far, though ''From Mars to Sirius'' and ''The Way of All Flesh'' are also well-known.

* BrokenBase: While the album was well received overall, the generally softer and simpler sound of ''Magma'' didn't make all the fans happy. Cue obligatory accusations of "selling out" from fans or their more extreme era.

** The video for "Another World" shows the band members, in an animated style, attempt to build a spacecraft to escape to a titular new world, where they may escape our current polluted and dying earth. They only manage to arrive at earth itself presumably many years into the future, realising where they are when they come across a half buried Eiffel Tower. Mankind appears to have perished.

* FandomRivalry: With Music/{{Meshuggah}}. Although it has been often regarded as the "Metallica vs. Megadeth" of tech-death, the bands' fanbases have both shades of rivalry and [[FriendlyFandoms friendship.]]

** "Amazonia" from ''Fortitude'' is all about the increasingly devastating fires in the Amazon rainforest, and sounds appropriately bleak and menacing.

* NightmareFuel: "1990 Quadrillions de Tonnes" from ''Terra Incognita'' is a 3 and a half minute track consisting of an instrumental section with various screams over it. It is very surreal and unsettling in nature.

* TroubledProduction: A minor example happened with their sophomore album ''The Link''. The band rented an old grange and repurposed it into their personal studio, but this proved to be somewhat of a setback as they had just ended their tour for the first album. They had to build the studio and write their new songs at the same time, and the equipment needed for the recording was delivered late, leaving them with very little time to track the actual thing. Thankfully, despite the neckbreak pace, the album was finished on time and released in April 2003.

* CrazyAwesome: Jean-Michel Labadie may be the bassist, but his live performances are anything but subdued. Expect lots of headbanging and throwing his bass around.

** ''Fortitude'' seems to elicit similar reactions, some liking the return to a heavier sound similar to ''L’Enfant Sauvage'' with a more positive atmosphere, others seeing the album as an inferior retread of that older sound with an overly polished production.
