• Unintentional Period Piece: The book was written in 1998 and released during in 2003. Homophobia/Transphobia/Queerphobia is still quite a big American societal problem, though thankfully it's no longer at the point where gay teenagers would have to meet in secret in fear of being outed. Gay–straight alliances/queer-straight alliances as well as general LGBT clubs are now a lot more commonplace in high schools than they were at Turn of the Millennium.
