    "The Black Monk" (1938)

  • Values Dissonance: Two notable examples:
    • The narrator makes no effort to conceal the fact that he is searching for 5th-century British treasure on Chaard Island, and no one questions this. Today, one would need permission from the Government and probably some sort of accreditation as an archaeologist to be permitted to do so, due to the obvious historical importance of any such artifacts from a millennium and a half ago.
    • It is simply assumed that the narrator has suffered a Fate Worse than Death upon being stricken blind by the Black Monk. This is because, almost a century ago, most people believed that Disabled Means Helpless.
