YMMV / Futurama S 2 E 1 "I Second That Emotion"

• Franchise Original Sin: This episode is pretty much where Bender’s Flanderization started. Originally, Bender took more than few cues from John Bender of The Breakfast Club as they were both social outcasts with mean exteriors that longed for acceptance and friendship with some Trollish tendencies. Here Bender is literally a complete sociopath that laughs at news reports of mass death, and needs the Emotion Chip to feel any kind of empathy for anyone (and in the end it’s revealed to have been running on triple capacity and he was still a jerk through the whole thing).
• Hilarious in Hindsight:
  • When Bender is trying to get attention for himself away from Nibbler he shows off by removing his head and spinning it around his body while whistling The Harlem Globetrotters' theme. The Harlem Globetrotters would later be revealed to have their own planet and would make multiple appearances in the series.
  • Leela initially doesn't believe in mutants, despite later being revealed to be a mutant.
• Informed Wrongness: Bender's reason for lashing out at Nibbler was because an unattended can-opener nearly killed him, and as he implied, killed his father in the past. While Bender's behavior later was uncalled for, that can-opener was pretty much a deathtrap for robots.
