YMMV / Futurama S 1 E 2 "The Series Has Landed"

Go To

  • Crosses the Line Twice:
  • Genius Bonus: A lot of interesting cross-referencing with regards to Luna Park.
    • The park in the episode is a place people can visit during a trip to the moon. The park being referenced, that being the original Luna Park in Coney Island, was born out of a successful ride at the 1901 World's Fair, which was then moved to Steeplechase Park and later what would become Luna Park, called "A Trip To The Moon."
    • Bender shoves a beer bottle into the eye of Craterface, the theme park's mascot, in a Shout-Out to Georges Méliès' groundbreaking 1902 film, Le Voyage dans la lune, better known by its English title of - you guessed it! - A Trip to the Moon.
  • Heartwarming in Hindsight: Fry bemoaning the fact that in the past, nobody wanted to spend a week with him, with Leela adding that a week would be a bit much. Later on in the series, they become an Official Couple and in the second series finale spend their entire natural lives together with no one else for company when the universe freezes around them.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • Bender's dream of becoming a folk singer briefly comes true a couple years later in "Bendin In The Wind".
    • A put-upon corporate mascot with a moon for a head who is routinely mocked and disrespected by the people around him? Are we talking about Craterface or Martin Callahan?
  • Memetic Mutation: The episode is best known for Bender's declarations that he's going to go build his own versions of things "with blackjack and hookers".
  • Unintentional Period Piece: The Shout-Out to the original Luna Park amusement park, which ceased operations in 1944, was rendered moot when Coney Island opened a new Luna Park (on the site where Astroland used to be) in 2010, eleven years after this episode aired.
