- And You Thought It Would Fail: Warner Bros. assigned Michael Curtiz the job of directing this movie merely as something to do in between The Adventures of Robin Hood (which he had taken over) and Angels with Dirty Faces, which was being put together for him. Surprisingly, the movie ended up being one of the studio's biggest hits of the year, was critically acclaimed, and received five Academy Award nominations, including for Best Picture.
