YMMV / Ford v Ferrari

Go To

  • Applicability: Some have interpreted the film, about a group of talented creators forced to work within the constraints of a capitalist system, to be an allegory for James Mangold and his experiences as a filmmaker working within the Hollywood system.
  • Award Snub: A rare case of a film making the Academy Award for Best Picture lineup with no nominations in the top categories (acting, directing, and writing). The biggest snubs among fans are the lack of recognition for director James Mangold and lead actor Christian Bale. With that being said, it did manage to win two well deserved Oscars for its editing and sound editing.
  • Common Knowledge: As a result of his endless Fake American roles, several viewers were very surprised to hear Christian Bale speak with a Brummie accent, to the point some even thought he was trying (and failing) to do an English accent.
  • Genius Bonus: A shelf displays a model kit box for a Lola T70 - the GT 40 chassis was based on a pre-existing Lola prototype, the Mark 6 GT.
  • Most Wonderful Sound: The film earned its Academy Award for Best Sound Editing. Not only the race engines, but the thunk of the transmission as they shift gears, even the sounds of car doors closing (or not) are part of the story. You can even tell different cars by sound, most notably the difference between the Ford GT 40 and Ferrari PS3/4 when they're neck-and-neck. Sound you can feel, but doesn't blow out your eardrums in the process.
  • Nightmare Fuel: Ken's crash after his brakes fail. The idea of being unable to slow down at 100+ mph is bad enough... then his car spins out... then it bursts into flame so violently it looks like it exploded. Luckily, Ken is mostly unhurt. For now.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • Ken Miles' fatal crash shortly after Le Mans. Carroll Shelby and the other men make a futile rush to save him, while all Ken's son Peter could do was watch in shock of seeing his father die in front of him (albeit from a distance). The last shot we see of Shelby (six months after the crash) shows that he feels personally responsible for causing his friend's death, since he designed the car that ultimately took Miles' life.
    • The scene where Carroll invites Henry Ford II to ride in the upgraded GT40 with him. At first he's sobbing in terror and then sobs wishing that his father was alive so that he could have seen the car his firm had built.
    • Watching the film as a racing fan. just knowing that almost all of the drivers seen and mentioned in the film are dead, either due to crashes or natural causes
