• Diagnosed by the Audience: While he is decidedly sane, Eamonn is incredibly cold, ruthless, icy, unemotional, and has no qualms about ruthlessly murdering dozens of people, traits commonly found in someone with antisocial personality disorder.
• Tear Jerker: Pretty much every scene involving Eamonn, his mother and Heather.
• The Woobie: Multiple in Eamonn's family, in fact, each and every member:
  • Eamonn is a young and idealistic teenager who finds his hopes dashed constantly by his extreme poverty, and the influence of his corrupt and hateful uncle, who frequently has sex with his mother in exchange for payments, which is a major blow to his honour. Made worse when his uncle rapes her in a spiteful effort to teach Eamonn respect, before cutting off his payments, leading to the death of his infant half-sister, Heather.
  • Aoife, Eamonn's mother, has had to make do as a single parent since the death of her husband during the Irish Civil War of 1920, now raising alone a distant and discontented teenage son, and an accidental daughter through the constant sexual advantages her brother-in-law, John Lees, takes in her. Having been reduced to a whore may be bad enough, but it's made worse when John rapes her in order to spite her son, and then cuts off his payments to their family, leading to the death of her daughter, Heather.
  • Heather, Eamonn's infant half-sister, was a mistake born through the sexual arrangement John Lees has with his sister-in-law Aoife, but due to Whooping Cough, she is a very ill girl and requires medicine in order to keep her alive. Once John Lees cuts off his payments to their family out of spite, her short life meets a tragic end as she succumbs to her illness when the medicine runs out.
