YMMV / Family Ties S 1 E 6 Give Your Uncle Arthur A Kiss

Go To

  • Nightmare Fuel: Meta example. After confessing to her mother that Arthur molested her, Elyse confessed to Mallory that the same abuse happened to her from a family friend she trusted when she was young. Instead of telling her parents (like Mallory did), Elyse just ran back to her childhood room, put on her records and tried to pretend nothing happened. And this went unsaid for years.
  • No Yay: Arthur seducing Mallory. Due to their age difference, he's friends with her parents, and was like an uncle to her. And his actions against her were non-consensual.
  • Squick: Arthur patting Mallory's on the behind during a hug and then giving her a forceful kiss.
    • The fact that the same guy who molested Mallory's used to bathe her when she was an infant.
  • Tear Jerker: Mallory's sobbing when she says, "No, but he scared me" can be this, especially for viewers who can relate to and closely identify with her situation.
  • Values Dissonance: Keeping in mind it has never been OK for a grown man to seduce — even unwittingly, even if they did not cross a line where criminal charges could be filed — a teenage girl, this sort of actions might have been kept quiet in 1982, when this episode originally aired. A background check certainly would never have revealed his actions, even though they were job-related, or the real reason for leaving his job. (Word of God says he did resign from WKS in response to the events of this episode, as he is not heard from again.) And more importantly, few victims of sexual abuse, harassment, or whatever you want to call Arthur's behavior toward Mallory were likely reported. Remember, this was 35 years before #MeToo and before someone like Mallory would have had the courage to go public with what happened to her, and that Arthur would have long been retired before his actions became public. (Indeed, his portrayer, David Spielberg, died in 2016, more than a year before the #MeToo movement began.)
