• Tear Jerker: Marilyn realizing that Lydia went along with everything she pushed on her not because she loved books or science, but because she loved Marilyn, and that she might have played a part in pushing Lydia to her death. She then starts begging for Lydia to come back and stay so she can start over.
  • On the last page of the book, it's said that Nath will think about Lydia during all the important parts of his life, including when he becomes an astronaut and is looking down at the Earth from space.
    So much will happen, he thinks, that I would want to tell you about.
• Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Arguably the entire family, besides Hannah. All of them are obsessed with their own problems and suffer from some considerable Lack of Empathy towards one another at times, particularly James, who treats Nath with outright contempt (which he is rather Easily Forgiven for), ignores his wife and youngest daughter and projects his insecurities onto Lydia while constantly wallowing in self-pity. While it's undeniably he had a tough upbringing and is a victim of racism, he acts like he's the only person to ever suffer any kind of discrimination and has the nerve to get mad when Marilyn and Nath call him out on his affair.
