YMMV / Everest (1998)

Go To

  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • The events of May 10, 1996 where eight people died either from hypothermia, elevation sickness or falling (or a combination thereof).
      • Others lost extremities or parts of extremities to severe frostbite.
    • Walking up the South Ridge to the summit, where two feet too far to the left sends you falling thousands of feet to your death in Nepal, and two feet too far to the right sends you falling thousands of feet to your death in Tibet.
    • Avalanches and ice tower collapses in the Khumbu Icefall.
    • Crossing crevasses with an aluminum ladder in the Khumbu Icefall.
    • The remains of dead climbers on Everest. While clean-up efforts over the years have either removed them, covered them up, or pushed them out of sight over cliffs, some can still be seen by climbers.
    • The DeathZone, a reference to an altitude roughly 26,000 feet or 8000 meters above sea level, where the thin atmosphere and resulting cold and lack of oxygen drain even the strongest climber's energy (it also prevents most helicopters from functioning effectively, even if the weather were perfect, which is why they are not used).
  • Tear Jerker:
    • Ed Viesturs finding the bodies of Rob Hall and Scott Fischer on his way to the summit.
    • Rob Hall's phone call to his wife Jan.
