- Award Snub: Not only did Germany not submit it for Best Foreign Language Film, but it lost the Oscar for Best Writing Adapted Screenplay to The Silence of the Lambs.
- Special Effects Failure: When Solly and the orphans are fleeing from the advancing Germans, they are harassed by a German fighter, which is obviously a remote-controlled toy plane.
- Stock Footage Failure: Solly is saved from a Gestapo investigation when an Allied plane destroys the building he was just in. However, the plane shown is stock footage of a C-130 Hercules, which wasn't even on the drawing board at the end of the war.
- Tear Jerker: The ending, when Solly and Isaak finally reunite. The war is over, but Solly is about to be shot as a traitor by the Soviets (as he was a Komsomol but is wearing a Nazi uniform). Then, a voice calls out "Solek?" It's Isaak, who's just been liberated from the concentration camp. They embrace and spend several moments laughing and weeping in joy.
