• Values Dissonance: Masters regularly beat students, sometimes quite brutally. The punishments are described as 'necessary and desirable for some dispositions'. Today school corporal punishment is illegal in Britain. Attitudes towards the boys' misbehaviour have changed in the opposite direction - for example, being accused of stealing £‎6 (about £‎600 today) from the cricket box is still very bad, but not so bad that a teenager would be considered 'worse than dead, guilty, stained, dishonoured' by his own mother.
