YMMV / Epistles to Timothy

Go To

  • Fair for Its Day: Nowadays, 1st Timothy 2:11-15 is among the most controversial passages in the Bible because of Paul's desires that women should learn in silence. But in the 1st century AD, it would have been shocking to suggest that women could learn, period!
  • Values Dissonance: Paul in 1st Timothy 2:12-14 says that he does not permit a woman to "usurp authority" over a man, and insists that Adam was not deceived like Eve was. Unfortunately, this verse has been co-opted by chauvinistic men as giving them all the excuses in the world to treat women as they please.
