  • Harsher in Hindsight: The scenes where Marianne (and later Eva) criticizes Albert's weight can be uncomfortable with the knowledge that James Gandolfini died of a heart attack due to his weight, and not long after filming ended. Especially the scene where Albert talks about how he knows he needs to lose weight, and that his health is not good.
  • Jerkass Woobie: Marianne. Yes, she's a self-important, cold-hearted woman who cheated on Albert, and is arguably the main antagonist of the film. But, this is only because Eva brings the worst out of her by asking about Albert constantly. By the end of the film, she's lost the only real friend she has, and clearly looks guilty that she unknowingly sabotaged Albert's new relationship. We never really find out how she coped with this situation.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • Albert's reaction to Eva bullying him for his quirks during a party with her friends, especially since they are things his wife insulted him about, as well as things that Albert privately told Eva he was embarrassed about.
    • The break-up scene. Gandolfini does an amazing job of selling Albert's feelings of betrayal and heartbreak, and Dreyfus shows her dramatic acting chops when Eva realizes how much she has hurt him.
