YMMV / 8 Women

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Regarding Suzon's claim that Marcel impregnated her, a lot of viewers think she made that up on the spot just to shock Catherine, especially as the matter never gets properly discussed.
  • Angst? What Angst?: Pierrette only grieves for her brother until her musical number starts. After that, she's uncannily cheerful and is more entertained by the other women trying to find the culprit than anything else.
  • Fan Nickname: Fanfic writers seem to agree on "Alain" as the name of Gaby's first love/Suzon's real father (he's a case of No Name Given in canon).
  • Les Yay: There's still quite a bit of this even if one excludes all the stuff going on between Gaby, Pierrette, Chanel and Louise, which is just text.
    • Suzon and Louise have a lot of tension with each other almost from their first meeting. At the end when the plot is being revealed, they hold onto each other tightly, and they're paired together for the last dance like Gaby and Pierrette are.
    • Catherine seems appreciative of Louise's musical number, grinning and biting her lip.
    • Easy to miss, Louise smiles seemingly flirtatiously at Augustine after her makeover.
  • Older Than They Think: Robert Thomas' play that this film is based on had been adapted to cinema long before, with the title of La Nuit des Suspectes, made in 1957. It's decidedly eclipsed by Ozon's film, and viewers are not likely to hear of it without doing research on the source material.
  • One True Pairing: Gaby/Pierrette is what's shipped by most of the fanfiction-writing, fan video-making community.
  • Signature Scene:
    • Gaby and Pierrette kissing.
    • Among the musical numbers, Catherine's, Augustine's, Louise's and Gaby's are perhaps the most talked about.
  • Unpopular Popular Character: With the possible exception of Chanel after she comes out of the closet, Pierrette is undoubtedly treated the worst by the other women, due to the suspicious circumstances of her showing up at the house and her low-status occupation. Fans of the movie tend to rate her as one of their favorite characters though.
