YMMV / Ed Edd N Eddy S 3 E 23 If It Smells Like An Ed

  • Alternate Character Interpretation:
    • Was Rolf an accomplice to Jimmy in exchange for the Jujubes or (as evidenced by the line "Rolf is confused as to why you supply him with these Jujubes") was Jimmy trying to set Rolf up as a scapegoat? The latter is further backed up by the fact that the boot that Jimmy used to create the misleading footprint is almost the same size as Rolf's feet (and looks like something Rolf would wear when farming).
    • Did the kids really assume the Eds were responsible for everything that happened, or did they know they were innocent this whole time and just wanted an excuse to brutalize them?
  • Aluminum Christmas Trees: Jujubes are seen this episode being very crucial in the plot since Jimmy uses them in his scheme against the Eds, and Rolf can be seen eating them throughout the episode. Jujubes are in fact a real world candy over 150 years old, consisting of the five colors: Violet, Lilac, Lime, Wild Cherry, and Lemon.
  • Fanon Discontinuity: Easily the most controversial episode of the series, if only because of how needlessly cruel Jimmy ends up being to Ed and Edd and the hell he puts them through, and many fans have straight-up disowned it as a result.
  • Fridge Horror: Despite any vague implications concerning Plank's sentience, he's always the one to make Johnny aware of events that no one else sees. One could wonder how things could have played out when Johnny was being abducted by Jimmy, especially since Plank would have seen him when it was happening.
  • Jerkass Woobie: Jimmy shows a side that has proven to be much too dark for many viewers, but nobody likes to be publicly humiliated especially that Jimmy gave the Eds genuine kindness that day and Eddy decides to spit on it with a wedgie.
  • Karmic Overkill: Of course, there is no doubt that Eddy disrupting Jimmy's Friendship Day festivities by giving Jimmy an atomic wedgie was uncalled for and warranted him getting taken down a peg. However, the sheer lengths Jimmy goes for payback was seen by a number of viewers as going overboard (especially since Ed and Edd didn't do anything to provoke Jimmy other than laugh at him alongside the other kids after the wedgie) and even ended up both overshadowing the episode's interesting detective concept and permanently tarnishing Jimmy as a character for much of the fanbase.
  • Misaimed Fandom: With a controversial episode like this, it's not surprising.
    • While Ed and Edd didn't deserve to be punished, some fans see Eddy as a "saint" who did nothing wrong to warrant the Humiliation Conga Jimmy put him and his friends through despite that he instigated the entire events of the episode because of his jerkiness.
    • Some fans also believed that Jimmy deserved to be wedgied by Eddy, despite the former actually trying to be friendly towards the Eds.
  • Never Live It Down: Despite Jimmy regularly being portrayed as a gentle kid, people will always remember him for his Misplaced Retribution towards Ed and Edd here. Not helping that, while he obviously went too far, he was being nice to the Eds until Eddy gave him the wedgie.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: The idea of Jimmy getting revenge on Eddy by devising a wonderfully complex plan plus the detective elements is actually a good concept. Sadly, it ends up bombing as spectacularly as it does due to his revenge going too far plus the fact that all three of the Eds end up paying the price when the worst thing Ed and Edd ended up doing was simply sticking by Eddy's side.
  • The Woobie: As mentioned above, Ed and Edd are forced to share the blame for Eddy setting Jimmy off, simply for standing by Eddy's side.
