YMMV / Dragons: Rescue Riders

Go To

  • Broken Base: As soon as the first trailer was revealed, the HTTYD fanbase has been divided. The vocal majority despise the spin-off series for being entirely different from the movie series, and the supporters and young target audience liking it for its own take on the series.
  • Critical Dissonance: Most fans of the HTTYD movie series and its midquel animated shows were not looking forward to Rescue Riders. Many criticized the show for its younger demographic; the story being set in an alternate universe from the main series; its animation quality compared to other related media; the characters not being Hiccup, Toothless, and co.; the concept of talking dragons; etc. However, Rescue Riders is adored by its young target audience, enough to greenlight a second season that was released months later.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
  • Ho Yay: "Secrets of the Songwing" is about reuniting a Songwing dragon with her "songmate", also female. They have a joyful reunion as the sun sets, touching foreheads and circling each other as they sing in harmony. Both sport colorful rainbow wings.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: Some are mainly interested in the new species of dragons introduced in the series.
  • Older Than They Think: Dragonese, the language of the dragons, actually comes from the book series the rest of the franchise is based on, and is not a creation of the show.
  • Vocal Minority: The majority of the older How to Train Your Dragon fanbase are incredibly vocal about their hate towards Rescue Riders. Some fans, however, have chosen to ignore it since it's not canon to HTTYD movie storyline, or embraced it as part of the general franchise.
