YMMV / Donnie Brasco

Go To

  • Award Snub: Depp and Pacino's performances were and are widely praised, but were largely ignored by the institutions at the time
  • Misaimed Fandom: The book Gomorrah mentions that Donnie Brasco is a popular movie amongst the Camorra (the Naples mafia), as Donnie turns away from the FBI and becomes a gangster in his heart.
  • Narm Charm: Lefty's first scene with Donnie was noted on the DVD Commentary as one that could have been pathetic, but worked due to Al Pacino's skill. Lefty's line: "In all the five boroughs, I'm known, forget about it. I'm known all over the fuckin' world. Anybody, ask anybody about Lefty from Mulberry Street, eh? You pissin' up the wrong fuckin' tree, my friend."
  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • Donnie having to cut up Nicky's body. Made worse by the fact that he was the merriest one in the gang and he got whacked in Donnie's place.
    • The previous scene where Sonny Black and his crew ambush and kill Sonny Red and co. is quite graphic and intense.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • Lefty going to face his certain death at the end of the film.
    • Pistone's awkward interactions with his family.
    • It's rather sad seeing a loyal, reliable, experienced guy like Lefty being constantly passed over in favor of younger, more promising mobsters, such as Sonny Black or even Donnie himself.
  • Retroactive Recognition: Michael Imperioli played as an extra mob guy working for Sonny Black. He is briefly seen during the robbing compilation when they are loading suits on a truck.
