YMMV / Doctor Who S10 E1 "The Three Doctors"

Go To

  • Fan Nickname: SF Debris calls Omega's guardian creatures the Jujube Monsters in his video review.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: A somewhat tragic one, considering William Hartnell passed away just two years after this story finished airing, necessitating the role of the First Doctor to be recast twice over.
The last line from the First Doctor: Though considering the way things have been going, well, I shudder to think what you'll do without me.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • After saying goodbye to his two prior incarnations, the Third Doctor says "I hope I don't meet me again", and the Brigadier says "one of you is enough". Ten years later...
    • The Second Doctor offers the Brigadier a jelly baby, just a few years before his fourth incarnation would make it a habit.
  • Narm Charm:
    • The production staff can be forgiven the hideous monsters and Omega's scenery-chewing, as the interplay between Jon Pertwee, Patrick Troughton, William Hartnell and Nicholas Courtney make up superbly for it.
    • Hartnell's own performance is pretty lacklustre compared to his earlier work on the show, the end result of his arteriosclerosis ravaging his body and mind. Nevertheless, his brief appearance as the First Doctor is often considered one of the serial's biggest highlights, as it featured the man returning to Doctor Who— even if only for a moment— against all reasonable odds for one last hurrah, and it's quite visible that he's doing his best in spite of his condition. Rather than seeing him weak and dying as he regenerates, our last glimpse of the original Doctor within Hartnell's lifetime (and by extension our last glimpse of Hartnell himself while he was still alive) is a more positive one as he sits smiling and playfully chiding his successors. Plus, his introductory put-down of the Second and Third Doctors is arguably the First Doctor's Signature Line.
    • Omega's wail of despair at the catch in his Morton's Forknote  is over the top, but it also really drives the primal emotion home that he is now a permanent prisoner of his own creation.
  • One-Scene Wonder: William Hartnell as the First Doctor; despite only appearing for brief flashes of the story's runtime and not being able to do much due to his failing health, Hartnell's performance is often considered one of the serial's biggest highlights.
  • Padding: The scene where Doctor Tyler tries to escape the citadel was put in strictly to pad out the running time.
