YMMV / Doctor Who: 11 Doctors 11 Stories

  • Alternate Character Interpretation: The First Doctor's portrayal in "A Big Hand for the Doctor" is pretty different from his canonical portrayal on the show (his personality, ability to fight, etc.). Word of God states that Eoin Colfer decided to portray this Doctor as he had imagined the character to be — as a child he was familiar only with the Target novelizations and had never seen any of the actual television stories!
  • Harsher in Hindsight: "Lights Out" was one of the very first Twelfth Doctor expanded universe stories, and has a lot of this going for it, especially given that Holly Black couldn't have known from the four scripts she was given to work from ("Deep Breath" through "Listen") where his Myth Arc would go.
    • The Twelfth Doctor coming to the aid of a hybrid humanoid now reads as a sort of prelude to the Series 9 Story Arc in which he kept encountering, being reminded of, or even creating hybrid beings on the way to being challenged with the question of the identity of a two-race hybrid of Gallifreyan prophecy. Moreover, it was as part of this arc that he finally realized the "message" his face was sending him.
    • His compassionate treatment of "Fifty-One" also presages his similar behavior regarding the Cyber-converted Bill Potts, his final companion in Series 10's "The Doctor Falls", his penultimate episode.
    • The audiobook version of this story is read by Samuel Anderson, who played Danny Pink in Series 8. Because the story was released October 23, 2014, it arrived just days before the season's final episodes began to air — in which Pink was killed and revived as a Cyberman — then died again in a heroic sacrifice, just like poor "Fifty-One", and much to the guilt of the Doctor.
