YMMV / Detroiters

Go To

  • Aluminum Christmas Trees: Most of the ads and Detroit public figures are based on or lampooning actual Detroit commercials and personalities, if not played by the actual people themselves.
    • The ad Ned writes and produces for Dale Dieberkorn's eyeglasses business "Hunky Specs D.O.G." is a parody of the long-running Sexy Specs D.O.C. ad campaign, which also featured the owner Richard Golden awkwardly dancing for no reason.
    • The Devereux Wigs spot is an only slightly more absurd version of Dittrich Furs' "woman on horse" commercial from 1981, which proved so iconic that Dittrich just kept reusing the filmed footage over and over again for decades, re-recording the jingle every few years.
    • Every single ad up for a D award in "Quick Rick Mahorn in Dearborn", all of them narrated by Kid Rock and prominently featuring the Monument to Joe Louis, is a shameless rip-off of the "Born of Fire" Chrysler ad with Eminem. The one exception is Cramblin and Duvet's spot for Rick Mahorn's car dealership, which faithfully parodies the "Mel Farr, Ford Superstar" commercials from the 1980's.
    • Jefferson Porger is a fictionalized version of Joe Porter Menswear, a bespoke tailoring and clothing shop whose ads tend to feature staged tableaus of handsome men in natty suits.
    • Mort Crim's commercial for furniture store Garner Weich, with his bizarre, out-of-nowhere ad-libbed rant against ISIS, is inspired by an actual real-life incident featuring newscaster Bill Bonds, a veteran pitchman for Gardner-White and one of the main inspirations for Ron Burgundy alongside Crim. Shortly after 9/11, Bonds used an ad to directly and angrily threaten the Taliban, even telling Osama that "you just bought yourself a one-way ticket to Hell", which the show includes verbatim; the spot aired a couple of times, but was quickly pulled from rotation amid controversy.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: In the first episode Sam and Tim hit Carter Grant (Jason Sudeikis) with their car and drive off and cover it up. This was the only moment in the sries where they could be seen as Unsympathetic Comedy Protagonist and spend the rest of the series as very decent and likeable guys.
