  • Values Dissonance:
    • Danny's family and friends humour his desire for a girlfriend but take it for granted that he won't get a real one because of his disability. It's now more commonly accepted that most people with Down's Syndrome have normal relationships, whether or not they have a partner who is also disabled.
    • Some of the characters' language and attitudes towards people with intellectual disabilities would now be understood as offensive.
    • Similarly, some of the language and attitudes towards overweight people would now be considered offensive. Even though Lisa does need to lose weight for her health, a 13-year-old repeatedly going on crash diets from magazines would probably raise concern today, and she'd be more likely to be taken to the doctor or offered help to make lifestyle changes.
    • Barbara's mother is quite understanding about her getting drunk at a party, and figures she's been punished enough since she has a hangover. Most parents would now treat underage drinking as a much more serious issue, especially since Barbara is only 13.
