YMMV / Daicon III & IV

Go To

  • Awesome Music: While it's not made for the film itself and was unauthorized, "Prologue/Twilight" by Electric Light Orchestra is still incredibly awesome and fits wonderfully in IV.
  • Even Better Sequel: Daicon III was already pretty impressive work from a group of just three animators, but Daicon IV kicks things up a notch by quadrupling that staff number, resulting in higher-quality art and animation and more elaborate sequences that lovingly pay tribute to geek culture from both the US and Japan alike.
  • Sequel Displacement: Daicon IV is more frequently remembered and homaged than Daicon III.
  • Song Association: Due to Daicon IV's massive importance to the history of anime and the anime fandom as a whole, "Prologue/Twilight" by Electric Light Orchestra is more thoroughly associated with the short than with the band themselves.
  • Visual Effects of Awesome: Both III and especially IV are filled to the brim with gorgeous animated sequences, most notably the insanely fluid sequence of the explosion turning the city into cherry blossoms in IV, done by Hideaki Anno. It's especially impressive given the animation in both is done by a bunch of amateur pop culture nerds, with those very nerds going on to form Studio Gainax.
