• Angst? What Angst?: Miller doesn't feel any sympathy for all those who Mai killed, including his wife.
• Unintentionally Unsympathetic: While Mai's mother is understandably desperate to protect her daughter, this doesn't change the fact that Mai is a flesh-eating monster who's a danger to everyone around her, and the pills used to supress her real nature are clearly a half-measure at best. Rather than accept this and have Mai put out of her misery, she gets almost everyone at the U.S/Canada border killed and sacrifices herself to let Mai have her body and reach the States, where she'll no doubt kill even more people.
• The Woobie: Mai's mother, who sticks by her daughter even though she is a flesh-eating monster, and only tries to suppress her hunger for human flesh because she loves her.
