* AngstWhatAngst: Miller doesn't really feel any sympathy for all those who Mai killed, including ''his wife.''
* UnintentionallyUnsympathetic: While Mai's mother is understandably desperate to protect her daughter, it doesn't change the fact that Mai is a flesh-eating monster who's a danger to everyone around her, and the pills used to supress her real nature are clearly a half-measure at best. Rather than accept this and put Mai out of her misery, she gets almost everyone at the station killed, then sacrifices herself to let Mai have her body and kill even more people in the U.S.
* TheWoobie: Mai's mother, who sticks by her daughter even though she is a flesh-eating monster, and was only trying to suppress her hunger for human flesh because she loves her.
