  • Designated Hero: The core rulebook starts off with Black-and-Grey Morality — the players are in Aegis, an organization which definitely does some questionable things to protect humanity from the aliens, but the opposing National Defense Directorate is unambiguously sinister, straight up collaborating with the aliens. Later sourcebooks turn this around by offering the option of playing the NDD, presenting source material that paints the NDD as collaborating with aliens mostly to get psychic/technological advantages for the inevitable war against them, while Aegis are subversive terrorists who are wrecking the NDD's honest attempts to give humanity a fighting chance. If you subscribe to the NDD's view of things, Aegis' noble self-image (combined with the bad stuff they actually do) very much becomes a Designated Hero deal.
  • Paranoia Fuel: Gamemasters are specifically encouraged to develop campaign storylines that blend in as much historical and contemporary realism as possible, just to keep the players guessing.
