YMMV / Cobra Kai S4 E8 "Party Time"

Go To

  • Actor Allusion: The fight at Stingray's house might be a reference to He's All That where a character played by Tanner Buchanan fights at the edge of a swimming pool during a party. Interestingly, the martial arts in that fight scene might be a reference to Cobra Kai in itself, being a double example of this trope taking place.
  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Did Johnny really mistake Miguel for Robby in his drunken stupor, or was he so drunk that he was just mumbling off how remorseful he was for how he treated Robby and didn't realize anyone was there at all?
  • Genius Bonus: Amanda refers to Vanessa as "Marisa Tomei Junior". Keep in mind, Tomei's most famous film role is Mona Lisa Vito in My Cousin Vinny, a seemingly superficial, working-class woman who turns out to be surprisingly intelligent about automobiles, just as Vanessa turns out to have impeccable knowledge about child psychology.
  • Take That, Scrappy!:
    • Stingray was a Base-Breaking Character in Season 2, and there remains a not-insignificant population of fans who thoroughly enjoyed watching him receive three different and very well-deserved The Reason You Suck Speeches and a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown from Silver in this episode.
    • Despite Anthony having shown signs that he regrets how he treated Kenny even before his parents learned of the bullying, there were quite a few viewers who relished the scene where Daniel finally puts his foot down on Anthony's Spoiled Brat behavior by breaking a tablet he tried to hide and then tells him in no uncertain terms to get his act together or else.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Lucille and Johnny appear onscreen in the same scene together for the first time since the original film. Given her previous animosity toward Johnny for bullying her son when they were teens (an animosity which Lucille demonstrated in Season 1 that she still harbors), it would have been interesting to have seen some brief interaction or even just a dirty glance between the two.
    • According to Julia Macchio (Ralph Macchio's daughter who played Vanessa in this episode), there was in fact a deleted scene showing an interaction between Johnny and Lucille.
