- Designated Hero: The audience may not believe the Aellisar being kept secret is a good thing since they're portrayed as a mostly unscrupulous group. That may just be the fact the majority of ones we meet are spies, though.
- Squick: How Z's powers work.
- Z's reaction to the prospect of sex with Theodor Crane's wife since he murdered her husband and is wearing his body. Thankfully, that's avoided.
- Moral Event Horizon: Z considers sleeping with Theodor's wife to be one of these. He hasn't done it but the memories he's absorbed and desire for a human connection bring him closer every day.
- Too Bleak, Stopped Caring: The "heroes" are, kind of, well, evil. Z is the nicest one of the bunch and he's still a murderer of the innocent.
