YMMV / Circe

Go To

  • Arc Fatigue: Much of the plot revolves around Circe trying to do something, it backfiring horribly and then being chewed out by someone before she shrugs and goes back to her island. Just change up the characters and the situation a few times.
  • Critical Dissonance: Despite the novel being generally agreed by critics to be as good as, if not better, than The Song of Achilles, interest by readers isn't as high for the book. Tough Act to Follow is in full effect here.
  • Die for Our Ship: Penelope/Odysseus fans are NOT pleased that the book follows the myth that Circe bore a child by Odysseus.
  • Even Better Sequel: Most critics agree that this book is as good as, if not better, than Miller's debut novel The Song of Achilles.
  • Strangled by the Red String: Circe's relationship with Telemachus seems more akin to familial mother and son bond—only to get rather Squicky when they suddenly announce romantic feelings for each other in the last chapter.
  • Too Bleak, Stopped Caring: After about 200 pages of things going horribly for Circe no matter what she does, with nobody in her corner and no sympathy even for herself, lots of readers simply stop reading after Circe turns the sailors to pigs for the first time.
