YMMV / Chrono Trigger: The Musical

Go To

  • Adorkable: Lucca shows signs of this in "History, Our Story" when, after giving the team a Rousing Speech and getting praised for it, she spends pretty much the rest of the song stuttering and stammering in embarrassment in the background.
  • Alternative Character Interpretation: The song "Battle with Magus", ostensibly about how the title character wants to destroy humanity, has been interpreted as instead being a warning to Crono and his friends not to try fighting Lavos and end up dead.
  • Awesome Music: Naturally. Chrono Trigger was already known for this, with the musical adding to it.
  • Catharsis Factor:
    • Crono and Lucca destroying the R Series robots in "Broken Machine" after they pummeled Robo, which, due to the web video's sound effects and voice acting, was a much more heart wrenching scene than in the game. It's especially satisfying when they deride the robots as "broken machines".
    • Considering how much of a manipulative Jerkass who tried ruining Crono and Marle's lives Yakra XIII was in the game, seeing him get taken out in one shot is immensely satisfying payback.
    • For most of the musical, Lavos is a nigh-unstoppable truckload of despair with a horrific, beckoning alien voice and an insatiable thirst for destruction that makes his canon portrayal look soft, topped off with a rather high-and-mighty ego and frequent proclamations that all efforts from the human "cattle" are futile. Plus, he wrecks the world and kills Crono like in the original. Come the Final Boss theme "World Revolution", however, he's forced to acknowledge that the good guys are able to break through his shell and fight toe-to-toe with him, and once beaten down to his final form in "Last Battle", he absolutely fucking snaps (even the screech he makes becomes cathartic in this context) and is reduced to desperately brawling with the party, before Crono himself lands the killing blow.
  • Complete Monster: Lavos is an alien that caused a mass extinction event when it first arrived on the planet, and spent millions of years farming humans like cattle to devour them and all other life. On the Day of Lavos in 1999 A.D., Lavos would break through the surface of the planet, causing an earthquake as it did so, and carpet bomb the planet with a rain of fiery spears. When faced with Crono and his friends traveling through time on a quest to foil its plans, Lavos obliterates Crono for daring to stand against it. Hell-bent on destroying all life and openly taking pleasure in the suffering of others, Lavos proves itself the worst of all the musical's monsters.
  • Fridge Horror:
    • One of the major voices layered within Lavos' voice shares an actress with Schala. Perhaps even subconsciously, Lavos understood what the true apex of his evolution would be: The Time Devourer.
    • We never see Taban's full face in artwork until "Epilogue/Moonlight Parade" due to the brim of his cap obscuring his eyes. While he is depicted as Fun Personified with No Indoor Voice, was he also a Stepford Smiler because of Lara's accident until Lucca was able to prevent it?
  • Magnificent Bastard: Magus the Fiendlord was once a boy named Janus from the Kingdom of Zeal, until one day he was dislocated in time from his sister to the Middle Ages by Lavos. Swearing revenge against the being responsible, he grows up with the fiends and ascends to the rank of Fiendlord, manipulating the entire race of fiends in order to gain the power to summon Lavos and kill him. Eliminating anyone in his path to achieve his goals, his ritual is foiled by Crono and his group and Magus is sent back to his original time period. Taking advantage of this, Magus disguises himself as a prophet and uses his knowledge of the future to climb up Queen Zeal's ranks so that he may attempt to kill Lavos again. After the destruction of the Ocean Palace, Magus meets with the heroes on a cliffside and tells them how to resurrect the fallen Crono and joins them so that they can kill Lavos together. Later leading the charge on the Black Omen to kill his mother, Magus joins the rest of the party in fighting and killing Lavos after that, succeeding in his life's mission.
