YMMV / Christine (2016)

Go To

  • Award Snub: The extremely limited release and marketing of the film led to it and Rebecca Hall in particular being largely overshadowed in the awards circuit. Despite the universal praise for Hall's performance, she only managed to get nominated for a handful of critic's awards and failed to break into the mainstream circuit.
  • Broken Base: There are two camps: one that praises the film and Rebecca Hall's performance and those who feel it tends to go a bit past what's been stated with Christine's story. Christine's family (aka her brother, the only living relative of her family) also fits with the latter as they immediately disapproved of the film (despite little footage existing of Christine's time as a reporter, so the film had to work on what they could). They also did this with the movie Kate Plays Christine, which was more of a documentary and analysis on Christine. It should be noted as well that he admits that he hadn't seen either film, however.
  • Designated Villain: Nelson. His reasoning for wanting more "exciting" and "dark" stories are pretty logical if their station are having issues, he has put huge investments in the station to keep it afloat. However his treatment of Christine doesn't seem to help...
  • Just Here for Godzilla: Some people watched the film just for the suicide scene; the real Christine's death tape is considered the Holy Grail of internet sites centered on morbid fascination and gore, but its lack of public release (for extremely obvious reasons) has made such audiences consider it "the next best thing."
  • Narm: After Christine shoots herself, George is seen in a hospital waiting room reciting the "I'm OK, You're OK" mantra and asking the others to recite it with him. It's probably supposed to show how ineffectual the "I'm OK, You're OK" self-help system is in the face of a real crisis, but it comes off as kind of silly.
  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • The abruptness of the suicide scene, since most assumed it'd be not shown at all. Just the sheer out of nowhere outcome of Christine giving her last words as she pulls the gun and puts it to the back of her head and pulls the trigger can surprise a lot of people, even with how some people saw it coming.
    • Christine's Sanity Slippage, as she becomes more desperate, even aggressive, and down right full blown depressed which leads to the aforementioned suicide.
    • Case and point: After coming back from a horrible day of work (it being a Trauma Conga Line..), she finds her mother who's randomly returned from a trip with a new boyfriend. The result is a full blown Tranquil Fury rant between Christine and Peg, with Christine fidgeting and showing signs of her breakdown, ending with Peg and Christine going at it (although Peg tries to keep herself calm and knows Christine isn't being herself) before she finally cries "OH, WHY WON'T ANYONE JUST LISTEN TO ME?!". Peg just leaves after that.
  • She Really Can Act: Rebecca Hall does such a beautiful job playing Christine, to the point people kept insisting she get recognition.
