YMMV / Chairman of the Board

Go To

  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: The scene of Edison using some kind of concoction to essentially birth himself in the opening sequence..... what was that all about?
  • Designated Hero: Edison himself, who tends to come off more obnoxious than the Keet-like character intended.
  • Funny Moments: Despite the near-universal scorn for the movie, even some of the harshest critics admitted that some of Larry Miller's dialogue was strong.
    • "(destroys phone in hand) NAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIII'll call you later."
    • "Under my management, production has doubled! Fatalities have tripled, but there you are."
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Larry from R&D invents a male breastfeeding device, so "men can experience the joy of motherhood, too." This product was Defictionalized years later.
  • Memetic Mutation: Arguably the most famous thing about the film isn't the movie itself but an interview Courtney Thorne-Smith gave on Late Night with Conan O'Brien where she attempted to promote the film, only for fellow guest star Norm Macdonald to repeatedly roast both Carrot Top and the movie, with both Conan and even Thorne-Smith herself breaking down in laughter at his jokes at the film's expense. Becomes somewhat Heartwarming in Hindsight, when, following Norm Macdonald's passing, someone went through the trouble of renaming the film's Wikipedia page to "Chairman of the Bored" in his honor.
    • Even Carrot Top himself paid loving homage to Norm after he passed away, perhaps recognizing that Norm's legendary roasting was the biggest laugh anyone had gotten from the movie.
  • Retroactive Recognition: Courtney Thorne-Smith, who would later become mostly known for According to Jim.
  • Squick: Why is there a dead cat in Edison's fridge?
  • Strawman Has a Point: The movie has a version of this mixed with Hilarious in Hindsight: Bradford, the antagonist, blasts Edison's management of the company while the latter is shown driving up the stock price and getting magazine covers amid his antics running the company. The only problem? He was running the company in almost exactly the same manner as a lot of dotcom startups at the same time, almost all of which went broke. Had Bradford not violated numerous laws in forcing Edison out, his fight for control of the company would have been justified to save it from Edison's "interesting" management style. In the meantime, Bradford would arguably have managed the company competently even if he was only looking to sell...one presumes he would have gotten more for a functional company than an asset-stripped wreck, after all.
  • Unintentionally Sympathetic: The grouchy landlord, Ms. Krubavich. Seriously, with tenants as careless and obnoxious as Edison, Ty, and Zak, at least some of that cranky bitterness is justified.
