* AwesomeMusic: The theme song, which is often considered the best part of the show. Even people who ''hate'' the show agree that it's good.
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CTG6lbkEP_k The extended version]], [[KeepCirculatingTheTapes if you're lucky enough to hear it]], gives us two additional verses and an ''awesome'' guitar/harmonica solo.
* BaseBreakingCharacter:
** Is Shriek a good love interest or just another one of [[TheBully The Bullies]] on the show who doesn't deserve [=CatDog=] as her love interest?
** Dog. To some, he's a NiceGuy [[FanOfTheUnderdog who cares about Cat]]; to others, he's just as bad as the people who abuse them.
*** On the flipside, Cat himself also qualifies. His bossy attitude and manipulative streak have some fans feeling sorry for Dog as well.
* BigLippedAlligatorMoment: In "The Island" Cat and Dog get sucked into a street sweeper. We are then given a colorless dark void that Cat refers to as "the eye of the sweeper" where CatDog and much of the garbage that was sucked up is spinning around in a circle. In the next scene they are somehow shown to be back on the island again.
* CrossesTheLineTwice: The entire "Safety Sammy" video.
* DarknessInducedAudienceApathy: Due to being a SadistShow, this is likely on purpose.
* DesignatedVillain: Cat, when he's not being [[DependingOnTheWriter unspeakably cruel]]. Multiple times is treated as cruel for trying to make Dog behave or just give him a moment doing what he wants. In most cases, Dog acts like a {{hypocrite}} and sulks about Cat being inconsiderate until he gets things his way, and continues ignoring Cat's well being entirely. In all cases, the IdiotHoudini trumps pushy social climber.
** Rancid Rabbit can border as such. In some cases he's just a corrupt authority figure, in others he is merely punishing the two for genuine misbehavior. In "All You Can't Eat" he bans Dog from his restaurant for taking liberties last time he came. His only truly unscrupulous act was waiting till ''after'' they'd already paid to throw them out (and even that could be considered a small back payment for all the damage they caused).
* EarWorm: ''Cat-Dog, Cat-Dog! Alone in the world is a little Cat-Dog!''
** "A pretty little piece of paradise / That's a-where I wanna be…"
** [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kP4Yv5_dwx4 "Parents / That's right, parents / Tall, short, wacky, wiggly parents…"]]
** Cat diggety dog! (Cat diggety dog!) Dog diggety cat! (Dog diggety cat!)
** "Bow diddy bow wow, bow diddy meow! Diddy diddy bow wow meow meow meow!"
* FridgeBrilliance: The third line of the theme song nearly 100% references their adoptive parents.
* FridgeHorror: How does [=CatDog=] go to the bathroom?
** Some episodes imply there's an anus in the center of their body. [[{{Squick}} Which is still quite unsettling]], though considerably less so.
** FridgeBrilliance: That's roughly where their respective hindquarters would be if they were a regular cat and dog, so it makes sense.
** Cat has nine lives. Dog only has one. What will happen when Dog dies? Will Cat have to drag his brother's dead body around for the rest of his eight lives?
*** Really, unless they [[TogetherInDeath die at the same time]], one of them is going to be dragging his dead brother. Or, more likely given… er… potential consequences, the body might be surgically removed.
%% * FriendlyFandoms: Shockingly, with ''Franchise/LoveLive''.
* HilariousInHindsight: In "Guess Who's Going to Be Dinner!", Cat says of the blue-furred Winslow, "I could make a rodent WesternAnimation/{{Ratatouille}}."
** "I predict that the trees will speak Japanese." Years later, [[VideoGame/PokemonGoldAndSilver Sudowoodo]] was introduced.
* JerkassWoobie: Cat, though sometimes he's just TheWoobie.
** Eddie The Squirrel. As obnoxious as he is, he's constantly being treated like garbage by the Greasers. It's especially evident in episodes like Shreik On Ice where he's actually driven to tears over the Greasers' rejection of him. In another episode, he snaps and becomes a WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds.
** TheWoobie: Both Cat and Dog are this in "The Great Parent Mystery". Dog is confident that they will find their long lost parents, but when those attempts are futile, you just HAVE to feel bad for him. Cat as well, to an extent, as he has lost all hope in ever finding them.
* LoveItOrHateIt: Either this show was a good show that never got its due or a crummy show that signaled the beginning of the end for great Nickelodeon programming. A lot of articles about 1990s nostalgia firmly place this show as the former (usually by pointing out that ''Spongebob'' and ''The Fairly Oddparents'' are worse than this show), but online reviews seen on [=IMDb=] and jumptheshark.com have nothing good to say about this show.
* MoralEventHorizon: Cliff's biggest [[KickTheDog Kick the CatDog]] moment has to be in ''The Great Parent Mystery'' when he mocked them for not having parents.
* MemeticMutation: Fans asking "How does [=CatDog=] go to the bathroom?"
* NauseaFuel: It's a GrossoutShow. Expect quite a bit.
* NeverLiveItDown: No, serious, ''how does [=CatDog=] go to the bathroom??''
* TheScrappy: Winslow and Rancid Rabbit appear to be this, since they almost always ruin [=CatDog=]'s day - in Winslow's case, mostly because he's a complete bully. For Rancid, his recurring appearance and mean attitude is seen as annoying.
** Cliff of the Greasers, as well. Shriek is more of a BaseBreakingCharacter, as she has a few good moments with Dog, and Lube averts this, due to having a few episodes in which he is not an antagonist (and a lot of other instances of being too stupid and ineffectual to be malicious otherwise). Cliff, however, is just a bully (though to compensate, he arguably has the most frequent moments as TheChewToy).
** Eddie the Squirrel. His [[SmallAnnoyingCreature grating personality]] and unbelievable [[SmugSnake arrogance]] makes him very hard to like. Definitely intentional, since the Greasers sometimes don't like him.
** ReplacementScrappy: Lola came along a lot later in the series and many original fans found her not the best fit. She was very over the top in her first episode Sweet and Lola. It also appeared to original fans that she was replacing Winslow, given often when she was in an episode with [=CatDog=], Winslow was not.
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodCharacter: This can be said of the Ingrid Twins, who seemed to be set up as love interests to the titular characters with similar implied sibling dynamic. Their appearances are scarce, however, where you can count their total appearances on one hand.
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot: "The Great Parent Mystery". It had a lot of buildup to it and generated some interest into the identity of [=CatDog's=] parents. [[spoiler:Only, it turns out that the [[SarcasmMode big]] [[TheUnreveal reveal]] was that we get to see [=CatDog's=] ''adoptive'' parents.]] One could imagine a few people being annoyed by this.
* WhatAnIdiot: Even after Dog tells Cat that he's allergic to shellfish in "Seeing Eye Dog", Cat insists that Dog eats a lobster, even shoving it down his throat. This of course, causes Dog to suffer an allergic reaction that makes his eyes so swollen that he can't see. Not exactly the smartest thing Cat has done.
* TheWoobie: '''Dog '''. While most of the time, he's a cheerful and happy go lucky sort of guy, whenever he gets hit with BreakTheCutie, he gets hit. Hard. He's been laughed at by the entire town of Nearberg for being a failure hero (Dog The Mighty), worked to the point of hypothermia in a sled dog race (Mush Dog Mush), almost sold off as a freak show attraction by his own brother after contacting a disease (Dog's Strange Condition), bullied by mailmen while in a depressed state (Fistful Of Mail), driven to the brink of paranoia (Safety Dog), spent an entire episode thinking he was allergic to his own brother (Sneezy Dog) and has been cheated and lied to several times by his own brother. He also came dangerously close to crossing the DespairEventHorizon in the Great Parents Mystery special. Basically, any time Dog looks emotionally hurt or starts shedding tears, it's enough to just want to reach into your screen and cuddle the poor pooch to make him his happy self again. Someone, please give poor Dog a hug!
