  • Common Knowledge: The story is not set in the aftermath of a nuclear war. Aside from the description of the ruined city not matching that of a nuclear wasteland, the story was written eight years before the first atomic bomb was built. The cause of the apocalypse is not stated, but has significant parallels to Rome, suggesting that everything went wrong at once and society couldn’t maintain it, resulting in a mass die-off, similar to what happened in the Early Middle Ages.
  • Values Resonance: This is a post-apocalyptic short story about a primitive man exploring Ruins of the Modern Age. Despite being written in 1937, it might well have been an archetypal post-nuclear story from the 1950s or 1960s.
