  • Adorkable: Farideh, particularly when first introduced and starting out. She's a bookish dweeb who tries really hard to be good while getting lightly bullied by her sister and everyone around her, can't swing a sword to save her life, and is flustered constantly by Lorcan's teasing. All it does is make you want to hug her.
  • Anti-Climax Boss: Farideh tricks Adolican Rhand into drinking a potion that effectively Mind Rapes him... and just leaves him there to hallucinate while she bails. He's apparently killed off-page when his fortress blows up though an undead creature raised at the end of the book is implied to be him.
  • Complete Monster: Adolican Rhand is a sadistic and ambitious Netherese wizard-lord who takes an interest in Farideh in Lesser Evils, stalking her and eventually drugging her. It's later revealed that Rhand is a Serial Killer with a fondness for raping and murdering young women who catch his eye, a fate Farideh barely escapes. He later tracks her party to the lost library of the archmage Tarchamus, hoping to claim a spell the legendary wizard used to wipe out entire cities. In The Adversary, he aligns himself with the forces of the Nine Hells to harvest the souls of Chosen, splitting their god-granted powers between them, though he ultimately intends to double-cross the devils. As part of this bargain, Farideh is forced to work with him, using her power to see souls to sort out the real Chosen from the fakes; when she refuses to comply, Rhand has dozens of innocent captives—including children—summarily executed until she relents, intending to make Farideh his latest victim once she outlives her usefulness.
  • Magnificent Bastard: Asmodeus is a key, though seldom directly seen, figure in shaping the series' events; for more on him, see Forgotten Realms.
  • The Woobie: Brin, particularly during his flashback in Lesser Evils.
    • Iron Woobie: Farideh. Life keeps throwing grief Fari's way, whether it's for being a tiefling, being a warlock, or just pure rotten luck, but she just grits her teeth and keeps going.
    • Jerkass Woobie: Dahl, mildly - he's fundamentally decent once you get to know him and has got some pretty serious baggage he's carrying around, but can definitely be abrasive and unpleasant, especially early on. Lorcan is genuinely evil and more strongly emphasizes the "jerkass" part, but any scene where he interacts with his family or other high-ranking devils make it plain just how miserable growing up in the Hells is.
