YMMV / Born To Be Alive

Go To

  • Continuity Lockout: As a sequel, it does not stand on its own very well. It's hard to become really involved with this installment without having previously read I Will Survive.
  • Memetic Mutation:
  • Moe: Shay is essentially the textbook example of this trope. She is cute, shy, unimposing and speaks with a nervous stutter. She exists to be a living "comfort pillow" to Judy who seems to strongly protect her.
  • Narm:
    • One panel with Nick attempting to apologize to Judy suddenly has an odd Shoujo-style effect where Nick's eyes are alit, the font changes, and the background is filled with glittery sparkles.
    • Nick's expression when he realizes Judy is romantically involved with Shay gives him Black Bead Eyes, making him look less horrified and more like he just got his food stolen.
    • The somber panel where Judy describes how poorly her very religious parents treated her for living with Nick unmarried. Problem is, she refers to them as "Carrotholics," an attempted pun on "Catholics" that brings all the drama to a screeching halt. Not helping that it's easy to misread as "Carrot-holics," a la "alcoholics."
  • So Bad, It's Good: For those not taking the story seriously, the comic is such an angsty and bizarre mess of a drama it becomes one of the unintentionally funniest webcomics written.
  • Unintentional Uncanny Valley: Generally, Borba's artwork is nicely drawn and captures the images of Nick and Judy well. However, in the last panel, Borba gives Judy such full and detailed eyelashes that it looks like she suddenly is wearing a ton of mascara, giving her the appearance of a rabbit with human eyes.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Nick is meant to be seen as pathetic due to his inability to move on after his breakup with Judy. However, some readers feel that Judy was much too harsh on Nick, with her refusal to hear him out or accept her apologies. Some even feel that Judy is the one who should be apologizing, considering how in their last conversation, she was the one who resorted to physical violence. This isn't helped by how abortion is one of the most controversial topics around, making it hard for pro-life readers to sympathize with Judy when she suffered complications from her abortion.
