  • Complete Monster: Kuzunoha Shuhei stands out as the most vicious, misogynist bastard around. The leader of the Kitsune Demon Clan who sets his sights on the magical heroine Misao Harada, Shuhei attempts to rape her after disguising himself as her love interest and the leader of the Tengu Clan. After being foiled by Kyo and the rest of the Tengu clan, Shuhei manipulates a member of the snake demon clan into having Kyo poisoned before invading the Tengu territory, then attempting to injure Misao badly to abduct her. Shuhei gleefully states he doesn't care how badly he hurts her as long as he can force her to bear his heir.
  • Critical Dissonance: Was a New York Times bestseller but was utterly ravaged by manga critics.
  • Narm: Kyo's tengu form is rather... odd. A traditional looking tengu is seen sitting on Misao's desk in the first chapter as she explains her powers, but Kyo's tengu form resembles a ninja with wings, long hair, and a face mask that resembles a beak.
  • Squick:
    • The manga's treatment of non-consensual eroticized physical contact doesn't go over well with a lot of readers. However, Cheesecake cover-art aside, there are very few instances of anything that could be realistically called "abuse" within the manga, and the instances that do occur are perpetrated by villainous characters and portrayed as wrong. Sexy—BDSM themes are obviously present in the manga, after all—but wrong.
    • When a certain Jerkass Kyo's brother, Sho, ties our heroine up, encases her behind a magic barrier, and then when Kyo breaks through, starts talking about how great it would be to rape, kill, and eat Misao in front of him (not even necessarily in that order!).
  • The Woobie: Poor Misao....hounded by demons that want to either eat or ravish her, and her only defense is a Jerk with a Heart of Gold who insists on marrying her instead.
