- Alternative Character Interpretation: A variation. Eating birds is treated like an addiction (and very realistically), but as Sylvester himself points out ("After all, I am a pussycat!"), eating small animals like Tweety really is inherently part of his nature.
- He Really Can Act: Mel Blanc thought it was his finest performance. When producer Eddie Selzer died, he left the Oscar for this film to Mel in his will. It is now in possession of his son, Noel.
- Nightmare Fuel: You did see the picture on the main page, didn't you?
- Tear Jerker: Sylvester's breakdown in the climax.
- Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Ordinarily, Sylvester's foiled attempts to eat Tweety are treated as Laser-Guided Karma. But in this case, Sylvester genuinely wants to break his bird-eating habit and be Tweety's friend. As such, Tweety callously disregarding him and the sponsor cat as "bad ol' puddy tats" in the ending—even as Sylvester is actively trying to keep said sponsor from eating him—makes him seem like a Jerkass for ignoring Sylvester's obvious attempts to improve.
- The Woobie: The entire short is pretty much centered around Sylvester's suffering.
