YMMV / Better Call Saul S5 E8: "Bagman"

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Jimmy's plan to get the gunman to notice him. How much of it was to end his own suffering? While Jimmy knows Mike can handle a rifle, shooting the driver of a moving car is much harder than taking out stationary Mooks. If the driver killed Jimmy, he'd have to leave the car to get the bags from his body, making Mike's shot much easier and leaving the car untouched. Jimmy's "Come on" could be directed to either Mike aiming at the gunman or the driver coming for him, and his eyes are shut as if he's expecting to die.
  • Genius Bonus: Jimmy and Mike’s trekking Montage is set to Labi Siffre’s “I Got The…”. While fitting due to its “Sun don’t shine” lyric, its inclusion here is more likely due to the song better known for sampling it: Eminem’s “My Name Is”, which introduces his alter ego Slim Shady. With this in mind, it’s yet another marker of Jimmy’s ego (and Saul’s) having taken a serious hit.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Remember Saul's somewhat funny rambling when Walt and Jesse abducted and took him to the desert? The encounter with Tuco was bad enough, but here he goes through a Heroic BSoD — there's no way some nasty memories didn't come rushing back that night.
  • Squick:
    • The piss bottle. Not only is it prominent after Jimmy is told to save his pee, but one of the final shots of the episode is of Jimmy chugging it.
    • Jimmy gets a cactus thorn impaled into his foot after accidentally stepping on it, and we're treated to a gruesome shot of him slowly and painfully pulling it out.
