YMMV / Best Friends Whenever

Go To

  • Defying the Censors: Cyd explicitly remembers Shelby getting her first period in "A Time To Jump and Jam."
  • Diagnosed by the Audience:
    • Marci may have something wrong with her, as her behavior seems to go beyond simply being weird, though she explains some of it in Fight The Future.
    • Barry Eisenberg shown to have trouble recognising facial expressions and social cues, can't match emotions to faces and lacks several social skills.
  • Fridge Horror: It's a really good thing that Cyd and Shelby are allowed enough free movement to hold hands in their Bad Future or they wouldn't be able to go back. However, that could also mean they're already being experimented on as we speak. It's later revealed that they were intentionally allowed to touch because they had actually agreed to have their powers removed and that Barry was the guy carrying out the experiment under their request.
    • And that they finally remembered each other in "Shake Your Booty". They could have been stuck in the past, with no memory of who they were and Shelby could have become Barry's mom.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: A promo for the episode "Shake Your Booty" featured former President Jimmy Carter; this promo premiered on the day it was announced he had been diagnosed with cancer.
  • Ho Yay: Naldo sure seemed happy in the second episode, hugging Barry over and over again.
    • And again in "Shake Your Booty" when scared, he asks Barry if it would make him uncomfortable for him to ask to hug him, when Barry confirms it would, he simply doesn't ask and just grabs him.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: There are fans who watch this show because it features Forever In Your Mind band member Ricky Garcia.
  • Les Yay: Cyd and Shelby, very much so. Much of the time, their friendship and the way they talk about it is more like a relationship.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Janet Smythe crosses it by attempting to kill Cyd to have her molecules disassembled to extract her power. She almost succeeded, and she'll definitely do it again in the main timeline.
  • Retroactive Recognition:
    • Lauren Lindsey Donzis, who portrayed 9-year old Cyd, later joined the cast of Liv & Maddie: Cali Style as the twins' cousin Ruby.
    • Marci was portrayed by Madison Hu, who would later go on to play Frankie Wong in Bizaardvark.
  • The Scrappy:
    • Marci for some with her annoying voice and weird mannerisms including her acting like a dog.
    • Chet and Brett are almost universally despised due to being unfunny, annoying, and very dim-witted. The writers seem to have gotten the hint, as they seem to be Demoted to Extra in later episodes and downright absent when things get serious.
      • They seem to be slowly easing out of this as of season 2, with them undergoing a bit more character development.
  • Stylistic Suck: Spark Dynamo, and its follow up Crabnormal Behavior. In-universe, there's a debate about whether it's horrible, So Bad, It's Good, or actually a good movie.
  • The Woobie:
    • Barry. Poor, poor Barry. If you thought he was socially awkward now, he had it bad since 6th grade, and you can't help but feel sorry for him now after everything he went through. He was a short kid because he didn't get his growth spurt like Naldo, and he was known as "Little Barry", a huge source of angst for him. During his 6th grade dance, he hid in a trash can to prevent himself from being blasted by a tiny, but ruthless Alpha Bitch and her Girl Posse, and it went horribly wrong because he got locked in the janitor's closet, and went on an emotional outburst that earned him the nickname "Cry-senberg" from those mean girls.
    • You kind of have to feel bad for Present Day!Drake. Yeah, his future self is a major Jerkass and outright villain, but the present day version is just a guy who genuinely loves Shelby (something that never changed in the Bad Future), was looking forward to their next date, and has no freaking idea why his girlfriend just broke up with him.
