  • Award Snub:
    • While CiarĂ¡n Hinds nabbed a Supporting Actor nomination at the Academy Awards, Jamie Dornan did not join him.
    • CaitrĂona Balfe was deemed a lock for a nomination after making all the major precursors, but was shockingly snubbed at the Academy Awards. Making this even more noticeable was Judi Dench made their shared category after being the only one of the four supporting contenders to miss all top precursors.
  • Awesome Music:
    • Van Morrison has good songs —both old and new—show up in the film, specifically the award-nomiated "Down To Joy".
    • Jamie Dornan's cover of Love Affair's version of "Everlasting Love" is often deemed a highlight of the film.
  • He Really Can Act: Jamie Dornan's performance was acclaimed even by those who are usually very critical of his acting.
  • Tear Jerker: Granny at the end. Having just recently lost her husband, she watches her last remaining family board the bus to the airport, encourages them to move forward and not to look back, then returns home all alone.
  • Win Back the Crowd: The film has been hailed as being Kenneth Branagh's best film in a long time, no small feat after coming after the much maligned adaptation of Artemis Fowl.
