• Narm: A number of points in the book turn into this:
  • Hanna is portayed as essentially a demon child (not literally), playing up her special needs for attention and to torment, which in some parts of the narrative really comes across as a demonization of special needs in general written by someone who really dislikes children. For some reason her psychopathy gives her a mind closer to a twisted adult mostly to justify her schemes, (her thought patterns are much more ridiculous than the scary they are supposed to come across as) but leads to situations like such as having a fixation on dead bodies and murdering her mother, but an attack on Suzette that draws blood freaks her out.
  • Suzette rarely thinks to take photos or videos of Hanna actions, and has bizarre trains of thought like describing one of Hanna's teachers randomly as a "gay Mr. Rogers", wonders about her ethnically ambiguous doctor's country of origin after suffering nasty burns, and her general obsession with Alex being Swedish, to the point the latter is the first explanation she can think of to defend him when challenged that Hanna's behavior might be caused by abuse from her father.
