- Narm: Vertical Inc.'s translator's attempt to translate the Tenge clan and their servants' peculiar dialect of Japanese, which, as befitting semi-aristocratic rural landowners, is both rustic and excessively formal, ends up sounding completely ridiculous in English.
- The Woobie:
- O-Ryo. An innocent servant girl who may or may not be mentally disabled, she gets along with Ayako well due to her child-like nature. Since she witnessed the murder along with Ayako, she is killed off, because who'd miss a servant girl?
- Ayako is turned into the family's sacrificial lamb to keep the police from discovering that Jiro is tied to a murder, and is forced to live in a cellar for more than 20 years, deeply stunting her psychologically and emotionally and leaving her with trauma that, by the end of the story, it's not clear that she's over.
