YMMV / As Five

Go To

  • Abandon Shipping: Season 3 made fans stop shipping Ellen and Lito after she only realizes she's in love with him when she finds out he's moved on. Ellen being selfish to the point of going after him to say how she felt despite the way she treated his feelings when they were together made it even worse.
  • Base-Breaking Character: Nem is the most important character in the series after the five protagonists, coming the closest to not being a Satellite Love Interest among the girls' romances. At the same time, he's extremely immature and not everyone enjoys his relationship with Benê, making him controversial among the public.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • Samantha keeps her status as this from Malhação.
    • Nanda gained a lot of popularity almost from her first appearance despite having a lot less to do in the second season than most of the supporting cast.
  • Fan-Preferred Couple: The second season had both Lica and Ellen become interested in Maura. Between the pair having a better dynamic as well as the fans not being able to accept anyone with Lica besides her ex-girlfriend Samantha, Ellen and Maura quickly became the more popular option. However, Maura fell for Lica instead and they stayed together until the end of the series.
  • Gotta Ship 'Em All: Most combinations of the characters has been at least considered by parts of the fandom.
  • It's Short, So It Sucks!: The small amount of episodes - and more than that, the small length of said episodes - is a common criticism of the series, as the events feel rushed.
  • It's the Same, Now It Sucks!: A lot of the plotlines in the series feel like they repeat itself, such as Ellen's arc every season involving a love triangle - which was also very prominent in her story in the soap opera.
  • LGBT Fanbase: Unsurprisingly, as it's a show with a lot of characters in the LGBTQIAP+ community, and Malhação was considered extremely revolutionary for Brazilian television due to Lica and Samantha's romance.
  • One-Scene Wonder: Alice only appears in one episode, but is very fondly remembered by the fandom - a lot of that is due to being played by Dira Paes.
  • One True Threesome: Before season 2 aired, people were into the idea of Lica/Maura/Ellen.
  • Preemptive Shipping: From the moment the official summary of the second season came out and the fans found out Maura existed as well as her role in it, Maura/Ellen became extremely popular. That popularity partially went away when season 2 actually did finish airing, for various reasons.
  • Replacement Scrappy: While not exactly the most exciting character anyway, a lot of the grief the fans give Maura is due to this. It was impossible to create a pairing for Lica that came close to replacing the fans' love for her relationship with Samantha, which meant that the series itself and the marketing around it pushing Maura so hard as a great love for Lica didn't go over well with the fandom.
  • Romantic Plot Tumor: The focus on romance over anything else as a whole but particularly in Lica's plot is a strong criticism of the series (especially in the second season).
  • Tough Act to Follow: Malhação was extremely popular and the hype over the series was probably a lot bigger than the show actually could deliver.
