- Diagnosed by the Audience: Both Mary and Charlotte come across as Autism-coded in this film, with Charlotte having more of the sensory issues, and Mary having more of the social awkwardness and Special Interest in Paleontology. Charlotte starts the film with a listless depression typical of Autism Burnout (and at one point breaks down crying after fumbling with a heavy bucket of coal), while Mary keeps to a routine she doesn't like having interrupted, and Charlotte's offer that Mary can be her live-in girlfriend is the sort of curveball out of left field that Mary is simply unprepared to respond to.
