• Angst? What Angst?: Atticus tries to evoke this when it comes to his past but it almost always fails.
• Jerkass Woobie: As we eventually find out, Atticus has been through a lot in the past and his Jerkass nature is perfectly justified for it.
• Harsher in Hindsight: An in-universe example, when the female veterinarian dog schools Atticus by pointing out his hidden insecurities from past abusive owners, causing him to angrily walk into the forest. At the time Courage finds it amusing how easily the cynical machine loses it, but when it turns out that all of her words hit too close to the truth, it becomes less funny, as the dog lampshades.
  • In fact, there are a lot of these moments throughout the fic, as more and more information about the characters are revealed.
• Heartwarming in Hindsight: On the other hand, there are these moments as well. in Chapter 11, Courage cries thinking that Atticus died from their attempt of creating a power surge, but becomes embarrased when it turns out that the machine was alive, and heard every word of what the dog had said. After a few arcs pass, it's revealed that Atticus had never thought that anyone would actually care about his death, at least before Courage became his owner.
  Computer/Atticus: *laughing* Well, well, well! I didn't think you actually cared!
• Ho Yay: There's more Ho Yay between Courage and Atticus than you can shake a stick at. An insult is thrown at one point where Courage gets called Computer's 'pink girlfriend'. Eventually, the two end up developing genuine feelings for each other and become an Official Couple. Atticus even legally takes Courage's last name and is married to him. And the fans squeed...
• Iron Woobie: Over three hundred chapters in, and both our main characters have become this. Come hell or high water, Atticus and Courage will save each other's lives. Despite everything that was done to Atticus in the past and things that still keep happening to him, he just keeps getting up and trucking on if Courage is next to him. And if Courage wasn't The Woobie to you in the actual show, he will be one now.
